ORIGINAL POST:
After a weather delay yesterday (lightning!), the space shuttle Endeavour so far remains on schedule to take off today at 7:13 p.m. EDT. According to NASA, the 16-day mission will feature five spacewalks and complete construction of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Kibo laboratory, which will provide a science platform outside the station walls. Yep, that's right - the International Space Station is gettin' a porch!
Mission STS-127 will be the first shuttle mission to visit the Station after its expansion to a six-person crew, when the Station will have representatives from all five international partners on board. You can find an interactive mission timeline here. After STS-127, only 7 more shuttle missions remain until the fleet is scheduled to retire.
Of course, even astronauts have to eat...and freeze-dried ice cream isn't enough to sustain the crew for the entire mission. In this pic, STS-127 crewmembers participate in a food tasting session in the Flight Projects Division Laboratory at NASA's Johnson Space Center. Seated from the left are NASA astronaut Christopher J. Cassidy, Canadian Space Agency astronaut Julie Payette, NASA astronauts David A. Wolf, all mission specialists; Mark L. Polansky, commander; Thomas H. Marshburn, mission specialist; and Douglas G. Hurley, pilot. Dieticians (right foreground) assisted the crewmembers.
